We here at Sevnthsin are excited to announce the launch of this year’s Voltage Fashion Amplified. Its been another great year working with the Voltage crew and we can’t wait for the event on Friday, April 24th.
Interesting little article over on CNN today talking about how the medical industry has begun using Twitter to break that often painful waiting room communication barrier. This is probably the first big ‘Ah Ha!’ moment I’ve seen in the recent Twitter phenomenon. We’ve all been there, we’ve all sat in that waiting room, anxious, in an almost panic state, waiting for some kind of news relating to a friend or loved ones status under the knife. Imagine refreshing the app on your phone and discovering, “Hey, its just a [insert relatively small complication compared to major life-threatening problem]. Thank goodness!”
So is this the first in a new wave of big break-through’s in the usage of Twitter? If so, I like the looks of things. Maybe someday I can bring my phone with me and get realtime updates on a surgery literally happening to me without having to decipher any ‘OR’ jargon. Whew!
Facebook just recently hit 150 Million “Active Users.” That’s pretty big news… well then about one month later, they’ve now hit 175 Million. For those of you doing that math out there, that’s about 5 Million new users a week right now. That’s a pretty impressive number, for sure. I could go on and on all day about how it merely solidifies the reasons for recognizing this space as a legitimate resource for new online/interactive venues, but I think the clearly visible growth rate alone serves as evidence of the very real power the online social scene holds.
So I realize I’ve been chatting up Twitter quite a bit this week, but it seems that its becoming quite the monster out there in the ever changing online social realm. This little article talks about the rapid growth its seen in just a few short months. Right now 11% of all American’s who’re categorized as being ‘online’ (not sure what precisely that means, because its not like the internet is something we devote time to participate in, its something that just encompasses our everyday at this point, but whatever.. that’s another discussion) are using Twitter. This is up from 9% in Nov and 6% from last May. That’s huge. It goes without saying that the general audience seems to be sitting at a younger base, we’re talking approximately 18-24, which only makes sense. I think the concept of ’social networking’ has a broader appeal to a wider range (ie: Facebook avg age is 27 and LinkedIn averages around 40), but tools like micro-blogging really do connect with that younger audience simply in that its become today’s version of “Hey, what’s going on?” You can literally follow what your friends are up to, reply to friend posts, post quick pics and vids all from the convenience of your mobile phone (or any other ‘online’ device… but lets be serious, its happening predominantly from the mobile space). Its taking the concept of txt msg to a new level. Hit all your friends at once with a simple click, and without the potential extra txt fee for when you inevitably go over your allotted monthly minutes.. am I right?
Anyway, just another chunk of thought dropping. Its fun to see it all changing so quickly.
Wired has another great article today on the ever expanding universe of Twitter and how its rapidly outgrowing its roots. Pretty interesting little look at how the simple concept of text based spurts of thought has grown into a realm of communication, notification and connectivity unlike anything originally foreseen.
Its no big secret, I’ve recently become quite the Twitter junkie around the office here (Twitter.com/Sevnthsin). But I somtimes wonder where else this could lead. We’re doing some interesting things with it in a few projects we’ve got going on around here, but where else will it lead? I always love to see the progression of technology, as a kid, going from records to tapes to CD’s to mini-disk, then back to CD’s and on to MP3 and digital downloads. So where will Twitter go, or is Twitter just another piece in evolution of communication? When will Twitter become ‘old news?’ Maybe I’m killing it right now by blogging about it? Either way, I’m excited to watch it happen.
This isn’t breaking news, by any means, but its something that’s become pretty prevalent these days and we’re finding more and more common as each day passes. Everyone’s on Twitter, and with the ability to literally post anything you like in a matter of seconds… even photos/videos, its no wonder people are looking here first for breaking news events. Even CNN has its own twitter feed, although the thought of a major news network attempting to utilize the 180 character one liner to break news seems a little awkward, but its proof that there’s some serious pull behind this thing. Well more recently, even Yahoo! jumped on the ship by including relevant “Tweets” as part of their search listing. Similar to the way Google tracks link backs, Yahoo! thought to utilize the power of Twitter to validate news searches. Pretty interesting concept and maybe one of the most realistic uses of a rapidly emerging technology.
With today’s drop of Minneapolis native P.O.S.’s new album “Never Better,” we here at Sevnthsin wanted to give you the opportunity to “Make It Better.” The album’s limited edition artwork features the ability to stack/rearrange transparent and opaque tiles to create your own cover art, its all about customabilityization, so what better way to get YOU involved than by letting you create your own tiles, generate your own layouts and print them out to add to your cover creation. You can even download a copy of the single “Drumroll” with your artwork in the ID3 tag. Doesn’t get much better…
A Preview of the Artwork (By P.O.S.’s hands themselves)
While I had heard that the magic of the instant photo a la Polaroid may soon cease to exist, I did not know of the extensive steps being taken to save it. Along with a Polaroid-only art gallery in Vienna, Polanoir, the owner of the Polaroid factory in Amsterdam (which had previously stopped producing the instant film) set up a Polaroid gallery online: Polanoid.net. Comprised solely of instant Polaroid photos, this site is a visual wonderland! I also find it quite neat that a so-called outdated medium was partially saved by new technology. And did I mention the mastermind’s name is Florian Kaps? Such an excellent name.
The whole idea that advancements in technology renders a good idea useless and obsolete is so unnecessary. I guess that’s why this little gallery makes my heart so happy. If you want a happy heart, I suggest a visit and a contribution. If not, then you probably hate nostalgia, technology and puppies. In which case, why are you on a computer and how did you find this site?
Norway announced this week they’re planning on converting many of their city busses over to run on biomethane captured from local sewage treatment plants. Yes, that’s right. They’re planning on running their busses on the gasses created by their own citizens ‘waste.’ A pretty novel idea in Norway’s ambitious plan to be completely Carbon Neutral by 2050. Should be interesting to see what other solutions start presenting themselves as other countries start adapting similar goals. It could be a very gassy future…
