Mobile Showdown

androidviphone30

I don’t think it surprises anyone that the direct comparisons would start coming out, but what DOES surprise me is how the comparison is being made between a future release and an almost 5 month old release. Its like comparing the Hoverboad to your current Chocolate deck or something. I’m not going to get overly specific in to the big differences, as you can read all about it here, but I think its interesting the comparison being made. Should be interesting to see how this all shakes out as Google prepares its release of Cupcake and if the announcement of the iPhone 3.0 has any impact on what happens in the last minutes before Cupcake.

BlackBerry App World Set to Launch

picture-2

So it looks like BlackBerry has finally set a Launch Date for App World… Next Week. BlackBerry is expected to jump into the App game on April 1st, making them another mobile retailer attempting to jump on the app bandwagon in an effort to compete with the Apple iTunes App Store. So far Google has been the only other to hop on the App Store train, and their concept has been interesting, but less than ‘exciting’ as there’s so much clutter in there, with no regulations as to what can/can’t be posted. Its not completely clear how BlackBerry will be handling their store quite yet, but my guess is it will be somewhere between Apple and Google (if they’re smart, that is). There’s something to be said about evaluating apps to actually make sure they’re complete and work properly, but at the same time, the current wait in the iTunes queue is SO long, making the Google App Store seem like a wonderful place, with no wait times and you can post anything you want. Well, as an Android owner, I can tell you that’s not really all so great either. There’s so much garbage in the store, and so many of the apps are just developers testing things “This is a test app experimenting with the blah, blah blah… Email me with feedback and I’ll launch a revised test.” HEY, guess what, I’m not interested in your tests, I want functioning applications that actually DO something for me, and I think I’m not alone in this, especially as the novelty of downloadable apps wears off and people are beginning to expect more from their overall mobile experience.

So, although I’ll probably never own a BlackBerry, I DO hope they find a great solution to hop into this crazy new realm of App Stores, because as with anything, competition drives the market. I want to see someone truly give Apple a run for their money so they blow my mind again. We’ll see.

P.O.S. Covers Pearl Jam

Our good friend P.O.S. of both Rhymesayers and Doomtree fame was recently tapped to pay tribute to Pearl Jam for a celebratory event surrounding the release of a deluxe re-issue of ‘Ten.’ Always a fan of a cover done right, this is definitely one worth checking out. Great work.

Facebook for your Desktop

There’s been a lot of backlash lately surrounding the launch of the newest iteration of Facebook. Its not incredibly user friendly and it really just comes off as a “Twitter Rip-Off.” So what better that to still have some fun with Facebook than with a desktop app? In today’s day and age, its all about convenience and not having to go through the ‘oh so laborious’ process of actually going to a website. So go snag this little bugger and get your Facebook on, right from your desktop.

Facebook Connect hits the iPhone

fbookconnect

So one of the big announcements at this year’s SXSW was Facebook’s recent addition of Facebook Connect for the iPhone. Facebook Connect is a way to integrate all of Facebook’s popular sharing/publishing features into Non-Facebook sites, making the sprawl of this massive social network even more massive. So the addition of the technology to the iPhone pretty much solidifies Facebook as the dominant being in the world of social networking (not that we didn’t already know it or see it coming).

I think this is a really big step in the transition we’re seeing in the world of Interactive. Interactive is no longer exclusively ‘the website.’ Especially in today’s world, the addition of a seamless mobile extension of product/experience/brand/whatever only makes your message that much more attainable, and potentially useful to those interacting with it.

So kudos to Facebook for, even as large as they’ve gotten, continuing to look forward and take the steps to be a real leader in innovative technological solutions. Its a bit of a breath of fresh air.

iPhone 3.0 – What will it be?

iphone_0412

So the new iPhone (at least the operating system, that is) is set to be unveiled this coming Tuesday (March 17th). There’s lots of speculation as to what this thing will actually include, but its rumored to include updates finally allowing the use of MMS as well as universal search and Blutooth Tethering. Should be interesting to see how it all shakes down, but considering the most recent wave of releases from Google and Palm, the iPhone seems to have its back against the wall as far as being the leader in innovative mobile technology. Yes, there are a lot of great things about the iPhone, and I’m not an ‘iPhone Hater’ by any means (even though I did make the conscious decision to go G1 over iPhone, but that’s another story), but I genuinely think Apple’s gotta pull some pretty big things out of the hat here pretty soon if they’re going to keep that #1 spot with more than just novelty.

Here’s my short list of what I would like to see them bring into the mix.
- Front Facing additional camera.
- Higher MegaPixel camer (1.5mp, really, that’s all you’ve got Apple?)
- MMS (no brainer here)
- Blutooth Tethering for data signal sharing
- Internal Storage capacity for App data
- Hot Pink Color option (not really).

Either way, I think Apple’s a pretty smart bunch out there in sunny Cupertino, CA. They’ll figure it out. It just seems like everyone else is throwing some pretty forward thinking devices out there as of late, and if Apple wants to stay ahead of them, they’ve gotta go EVEN FURTHER. Looking forward to seeing what they throw out!
